New PlayersWe are actively looking for new players with physical disabilities and under the age of 21.
If you or a family member or a friend are in that age group, and you have a physical disability, and you are interested in playing a team sport, then sled hockey is perfect for you! It is our experience that players should be at least 5 years old in order to follow direction and enjoy their time on the ice. If your upper body is strong then you will likely be able to push yourself on the ice. If not, you can still play, and we can arrange for you to be pushed by an able bodied skater. If your parent wants to push, even better. The program is entirely free for all who want to participate, so please don't worry about cost. The attached document has lots of information about us, our program, the rules of sled hockey, and various other forms.
Please contact [email protected] for more information about becoming part of our team.
Older able-bodied siblings are not allowed to play with the WSF Sled Rangers, though younger ones are welcomed. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate players with cognitive or developmental disabilities. Our friend Bob Epner runs a very excellent "Special Hockey" program out of Lasker Rink for both children and adults. |
New VolunteersWe have lots of need for volunteers in our program for both on-ice and off-ice activities.
Off-ice, we need help keeping score at our games, helping the kids getting in and out of the sleds, getting the kids on and off the ice, helping with water bottles, moving benches, and that sort of thing. On the ice, we need help working with the kids on hockey skills during practices and, during games, we need referees, help lifting up fallen skaters, and most importantly of all, we need people to push skaters who are unable to push themselves. On-ice volunteers should be excellent skaters and, preferably, hockey players. The attached document has lots of information about us and about what it means to be a volunteer with the WSF Sled Rangers.
Volunteering can be rewarding and we have found that volunteers get out of it what they put into it. Coming every week will allow you to develop a bond with the kids, and let them get to know you.
Some weeks we have lots of volunteers and there isnt that much to do, and some weeks we dont have enough. While we dont ask for a commitment that you come regularly -- thoughts its welcomed if you do -- we do ask that you recognize that the involvement may vary week to week, and that you indicate your availability to come on our Teamsnap website. All volunteers must be registered with USA Hockey (as volunteers), which is free. |
